feed your hunger for words & reduce world hunger

Here’s a great link for all you lovers of words, word games, crossword puzzles, and the like.

Click here to go to www.freerice.com — a website committed to the cause of ending hunger around the world. You get to test your vocab skills, learn new words, and develop more than a modicum of humility while donating rice (grain-by-grain) to the United Nations World Food Program.

The game is very smart, quickly adjusting to your level of proficiency and continuing to raise the degree of difficulty as you progress. You can even hear computer-generated pronunciations if you want. (As I moved into the higher levels, I actually wondered if the game had gone multilingual!)

Check it out! It’s fun, free, and for a good cause. And if I suddenly start peppering my posts with unfamiliar wordage, you’ll know where I’ve been!

  1. Yo! My name is Chris and I’m reaching out to world-conscious blogs. I noticed that you blogged about free rice, and I’m working with a small startup called Avanoo that is developing a similar concept. By going to our site (avanoo.com) and putting one of many badges on your blog, every time someone clicks that badge, a dollar is donated by a corporate sponsor to the non-profit!

We’re still in beta, but we wanted to spread the word as much as possible. If you can help us show others how, together, bloggers and web users can raise funds and awareness for good causes by using our collective power, I’d really appreciate it. Maybe you’ll even blog about us!

    Thanks for your time,
    Chris
