prayer for inclusion: planting the seeds for true unity consciousness

I wrote “Prayer for Inclusion” on U.S. Inauguration Day,
January 20, 2009, and was deeply heartened when
it won the title, “Inaugural Poem We Should Have Had,”
in a (small) competition at Australian-based

Unity consciousness begins with each of us.
Today and every day, be whole now.

Prayer for Inclusion

Include me.

Invite me into the circle and guide me to the spot that bears my name
Escort me with a steadying touch, loose your hold and bear me aloft
Include my joy and ebullience, my hope and promise
The tracks of endless tears and the wounds of struggle and pain
that have marked the past

Include me raw and refined, defiant, quiescent
Include me enriched and diminished, broken and healed
Embrace me as the one anointed and demeaned
Privileged and impoverished by stature, circumstance
or the trajectory of an inconstant moon

Include my willingness.

Reap the fruits of surrender I have cultivated for this moment
Lead me through a doorway unadorned
A hallway lined with latency
Pass the drinking gourd so that all who thirst
may sip the undilute nectar of belonging

Include me as woman, man, brother, sister, parent, child
Include me offering and offered, receiving and giving, creator and creation
Weave the strands of my soul into a blossoming tapestry of voices
oined by the shared heart of humanity and a long-aching hunger for unity

Use every part of me.

Include the infinitesimal and the inestimable
Lift me at once to my full height and humility
Draw out my hidden gifts and squandered talents
and draw me into the arms of others who await my arrival

I am here in this Now,
Filled with passion, with purpose
My prayer but so simple:

Include me.

  1. @ram0singhal,
When you say “rachel is rachel…mirror of god…,” my eyes fill with tears of knowing joy. I am grateful for your loving thoughts and words.

And thank you for the heartfelt RSVP. Yes, “be willing to believe, live, and see unity.” Beautifully said, O Soulful One.

I love that you can “hear” the “sound” of my words – even as they appear only on the screen. And if those words evoke emotions, so much the better. Poetry is a wonderful gift that the gods have bestowed on the mortal plane, isn’t it?

    1. divine….tears…t ears….truth ears….when I wrote I was in tears…..tears clears the vision of both the eyes…that is why eyes clarity is clarity of soul…..soul….science of universal love….tears is language of universal love…

      love all…

  2. Your incredible poem does indeed ask for the hand of unity and inclusion. It is such a tremendous discovery today because I am ‘meditating’ on a line I discovered: “…only through that point of nothingness can we enter the larger mind.”

The larger mind can only be found when we empty ourselves and make room to include and enlarge and be willing to believe, live and see unity.

Thank you for the invitation to remember.
